Hola México, April 2025 — craftsmanship as a curatorial standard

Hola México returned to Mercantil in its April 2025 issue, this time centred on Hillary Kent’s relationship with México and Latin America, and on craftsmanship as the core of her curatorial approach.

The distinction the piece draws is a useful one. Curating for origin means the history of a piece — who made it, where, by what technique — is part of the specification rather than a story added afterwards. That sounds like a design position, and it is, but it lands almost entirely on procurement: it rules out catalogue substitution, it means every piece has to be traced to a maker, and it makes the sourcing itself the thing being bought.

Working that way across furniture, lighting and objects is slower and less repeatable than specifying from a supplier, and it is the reason the results are not interchangeable with anyone else’s.
