Hola México, March 2025 — the story behind Mercantil

Hola México featured Mercantil in its March 2025 issue, covering the origins of the firm and the network of artisans behind the work.

It is a fair place to start, because the network is the business. Mercantil is not a showroom that holds stock; it is a set of direct working relationships with makers across México and Latin America — carpenters, blacksmiths, weavers, leather workers and potters — assembled over years and maintained one project at a time.

That structure is what a hospitality or residential client is really buying. It means a specification can be made rather than found, that a piece can be produced to the dimensions of the room it belongs in, and that the person who built it can be reached again years later. It also means a project moves at the pace of the slowest maker on it, which is the honest trade-off and one we would rather explain up front than design around.
