Gavilán Hilltop is a five-bedroom modern villa on the ridgeline above Pescadero, looking out over the Pacific. Interior design is by
Hillary Kent, who drew the big views into rooms at a scale that could easily have felt cold. Mercantil handled purchasing.The two-storey open living room is the centre of the house, and it was furnished the hard way — with
paintings and sculpture by Mexican artists and lighting chosen to read from outside the house as well as inside it. Sourcing original art and one-off pieces is not a procurement line item; each work has to be found, and it either fits the wall it was chosen for or it does not.Through the bedrooms the brief was softer — a laid-back Californian register built from accent pieces, soft colour and patterned drapery, all made to measure.Outdoors, the deck reads as though it floats above the ocean, and it is really several rooms: loungers at the pool, two large sectionals, a covered barbecue and dining area, and a firepit ringed with modern Adirondack chairs. Every one of those zones is specified for full sun, salt and wind, and all of it had to be delivered up to a ridgeline site.See how we handle
